Abdominoplasty Recovery: A Week-by-Week Guide
Recovery after abdominoplasty (a tummy tuck) is gradual and staged. Knowing roughly what to expect at each point makes the process far less daunting. The timeline below is a general guide only — every patient heals differently, and your own plan will be tailored to you at consultation and reviewed at each follow-up appointment.
The first 48 hours
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and usually involves an overnight hospital stay. You will have a low, bikini-line incision and, in a full abdominoplasty, a repositioned navel.
Gentle walking is encouraged from day one — it helps circulation and reduces the risk of clots. You will feel tight across the abdomen; this is expected and eases over the following weeks.
Week 1
Most patients have surgical drains for one to two weeks and wear a compression garment continuously. Rest is important, but short, frequent walks around the house remain encouraged.
- Drains typically remain in for 1–2 weeks
- Compression garment worn continuously
- No driving or heavy lifting
- Sleep slightly bent at the hips to reduce tension on the incision
Weeks 2–4
Many people return to light, desk-based work around the two-week mark, though this varies with the extent of surgery and the nature of your job. Driving and heavier activity are generally avoided for two to four weeks.
Weeks 6–8
The compression garment is usually worn for around six weeks. Most patients return to full activity, including exercise, at roughly six to eight weeks, guided by your reviews with Dr Livingston.
Months 3–6 and beyond
Swelling continues to settle over several months and scars mature and fade over 12–18 months with appropriate scar care. Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled weekly at first, then at three and six months.
When to seek help
All surgery carries risks, including infection, seroma (fluid collection), poor scarring, and, less commonly, deep vein thrombosis. Contact your surgeon or seek medical care promptly if you experience increasing pain, redness or discharge from the wound, fever, or calf pain or breathlessness.
