Breast Reduction on the Sunshine Coast: My Personalised, Low-Complication Approach

Who breast reduction helps

Many women with large breasts, known as macromastia, experience chronic neck and back pain, deep shoulder grooving from bra straps, skin irritation and rashes, and struggle with exercise and finding well-fitting clothes. For these women, breast reduction can be genuinely life-changing.

My priority: keeping complications low

My focus is on natural form and restored function, with patient safety and keeping complications low as the priority. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, I plan each breast reduction individually, around your anatomy and goals.

I use a superomedial pedicle technique, which aims to produce a natural, balanced breast shape with a strong safety profile.

Preserving blood supply from every direction

A central part of this technique is carefully preserving the breast's blood supply from multiple directions — medial, lateral, inferior and superior — which helps maintain robust circulation to the nipple.

Preserving the blood vessels and nerves this way supports healing. Nipple-areola necrosis — loss of the nipple — is a recognised complication of breast reduction, reported across all techniques in the literature. In modern superomedial-pedicle series the reported rates are low, generally around or under 1%, though they can be higher in very large-volume reductions.

As a reconstructive surgeon, I have personally treated young women who returned from overseas breast-reduction "cosmetic tourism", and others who were operated on by non-plastic-surgeons, after suffering serious complications including nipple loss — which has been emotionally devastating for these patients. Keeping complications low is central to how I work, and meticulous preservation of the blood supply with this superomedial technique is how I aim to keep this devastating complication as rare as possible. No operation is without risk, and no surgeon can guarantee against complications — but by being as meticulous as possible, my aim is to keep this known risk to a minimum, even though it can never be eliminated entirely.

Because the technique preserves circulation so well, it can often be offered to women with very large or pendulous breasts, including some who may have been told a full reshaping wasn't advisable for them. Suitability is always assessed individually at consultation.

Scars and healing

The scars follow the classic anchor pattern — around the areola, vertically down to the breast fold, and along the fold itself. These scars usually settle and fade very well over time.

Recent studies support the use of the superomedial pedicle technique for achieving reliable, natural-looking results with a strong safety profile.
