Will My Breast Reduction or Breast Lift Last Forever?
One of the most common questions I get from patients considering breast reduction or mastopexy (breast lift) is: "Will this last forever?" The honest answer is no — not completely. While these procedures can give beautiful, long-lasting results, your breasts are still affected by gravity, ageing, and life events.
What affects how long results last
How long your results last is very individual and depends on several factors:
- Skin quality — strong, elastic skin holds its shape better than thin skin with stretch marks
- Breast size — heavier breasts are affected by gravity more quickly
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding — these can significantly stretch the skin and cause recurrent drooping
- Weight changes — large fluctuations in weight affect breast volume and tightness
- Physical activity and support — high-impact activities without proper bra support can accelerate breast sagging
The technique I use
I use a superomedial pedicle technique, which scientific reviews have shown provides better long-term stability and less recurrent ptosis (drooping) compared to some other methods.
What the research shows
Current research shows that, on average, patients lose about 25–30% of the surgical lift within the first year. After that, the shape generally stabilises, and most patients maintain a good long-term improvement compared to their original position.
The bottom line
During surgery, I reshape and lift the breasts to a higher, more youthful position. While some gradual settling over time is normal, the majority of patients remain pleased with their results many years later.
Frequently asked questions
How long do breast reduction or breast lift results last?
Results are long-lasting but not permanent. On average some settling occurs in the first year, after which the shape generally stabilises. Ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight changes all affect longevity.
What can I do to help my results last?
Maintaining a stable weight, wearing supportive bras during high-impact activity and good skin care all help. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect long-term results.
Will pregnancy after surgery change my results?
Yes — pregnancy and breastfeeding can stretch the skin and cause recurrent drooping. Many women choose to complete their family first, though this is an individual decision.
