Am I a candidate?

• Post-bariatric or post-massive-weight-loss patients with circumferential skin excess
• Stable weight for 6 or more months prior to surgery
• Healthy non-smokers with realistic expectations

The procedure

• General anaesthesia in an accredited facility
• Circumferential incision around the abdomen, hips, and buttocks
• Excess skin and fat excised; tissues lifted and tightened
• Drains placed; surgery may be staged for upper and lower body

Recovery

• Hospital stay of 3–5 days
• Drains for 1–2 weeks; compression garments worn
• No driving for approximately 2 weeks
• Full activity at 6–8 weeks

Risks & considerations

Risks include wound dehiscence, infection, seroma, deep vein thrombosis, scarring, and delayed healing. The extensive nature of the surgery heightens pulmonary and cardiovascular considerations.

Medicare & rebates

A rebate may apply where excess skin causes documented functional problems such as rashes, often after major weight loss. Eligibility is assessed individually.
