Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

Am I a candidate?
- Adults with moderate to advanced signs of facial ageing, such as sagging skin and deep nasolabial folds
- Individuals with jowls or loss of jawline definition
- Healthy patients without uncontrolled medical conditions; non-smokers
The procedure
- General anaesthesia or intravenous sedation in an accredited facility
- Incisions placed along the hairline, around the ears, and possibly under the chin
- Underlying tissues, including the SMAS layer, are dissected and repositioned
- Excess skin is redraped; can be combined with neck lift, blepharoplasty, or brow lift
- Surgery duration: approximately 3–5 hours
Recovery
- Swelling and bruising peak at 2–3 days and subside over 2 weeks
- Surgical drains typically removed after 1–2 days; sutures at 7–14 days
- Strenuous activity avoided for 4 weeks
- Full results visible at 3–6 months
Risks & considerations
Risks include infection, haematoma, nerve injury causing temporary or permanent facial weakness, unfavourable scarring, skin flap necrosis, asymmetry, and hair loss near incisions. Smoking, poor nutrition, or medical comorbidities increase complication rates.
